Khartoum (international Desk) A mysterious drone attack on a Saudi-run hospital in the city of El Fasher in the Darfur region of the African country of Sudan killed 30 people and injured dozens. The hospital’s emergency building was completely destroyed in the attack on Friday evening.

Medical sources told the AFP news agency that the emergency unit of the Saudi hospital was attacked, but they requested anonymity due to fear of reprisals. It was not immediately known who carried out the attack.

The United Nations has appealed to both sides to ensure the protection of the civilian population. More than two million people live in the city of El Fasher, which has been severely affected by months of fighting. “The people of El Fasher have endured countless atrocities and senseless violence,” said UN rights spokesman Saif Magango.

The Saudi hospital’s emergency unit was attacked by drones a few weeks ago by the RSF. According to reports, the RSF-controlled Nyala airport has modern Chinese-made drones, which are capable of aerial surveillance and combat strikes. The US government has accused the RSF of “genocide” in Darfur and has claimed that both the Sudanese army and the RSF have targeted civilians and committed war crimes.

According to the medical organization “Doctors Without Borders”, the Saudi hospital is the only public hospital in El Fasher that is still providing surgical facilities, but due to the continuous attacks, health services are also at risk of collapse.
