Pak Army pardons 19 convicts of May 9 Incidents

Rawalpindi (Pakistan News Online) The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Pak Army has announced that several individuals convicted in connection with the May 9 incidents have had their sentences commuted.

According to ISPR, 67 convicts filed mercy petitions, out of which 48 were forwarded to the “Courts of Appeal” for legal review, while 19 were granted pardons purely on humanitarian grounds.

The ISPR emphasized that the remaining petitions will be processed as per the law within the stipulated timeframe. The individuals granted clemency will be released upon the completion of legal formalities.

A Testament to Fairness and Justice

The ISPR stated that the pardoning of sentences reflects the strength of the country’s fair legal process and commitment to justice. It underscores a system that incorporates principles of compassion and mercy while ensuring accountability.

In April 2024, similar pardons were issued for 20 individuals on humanitarian grounds.

Convicts Granted Pardons

The following individuals had their sentences commuted:

  • Mohammad Ayaz, Samiullah, Laiq Ahmed, Amjad Ali, Yasir Nawaz, Saeed Alam, Zahid Khan, Mohammad Suleman, Hamza Sharif, Mohammad Salman, Ashar Butt, Mohammad Waqas, Sufiyan Idrees, Muneeb Ahmed, Mohammad Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Bilawal, and Mohammad Ilyas.

Details of the Convictions

The pardoned individuals were previously convicted for their involvement in attacks on military installations, including:

  1. Bannu Cantt Attack: Samiullah – sentenced to 2 years rigorous imprisonment.
  2. FC Cantt Peshawar Attack: Mohammad Ayaz – sentenced to 2 years.
  3. ISI Office Faisalabad Attack: Laiq Ahmed, Mohammad Salman, Amjad Ali, Mohammad Ali, and Hamza Sharif – each sentenced to 2 years.
  4. Dera Scouts HQ Attack: Mohammad Suleman and Mohammad Ilyas – each sentenced to 2 years.
  5. Rahwali Gate, Gujranwala Cantt Attack: Mohammad Waqas, Muneeb Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Ashar Butt, Mohammad Ahmed, and Sufiyan Idrees – each sentenced to 2 years.
  6. Jinnah House Attack: Mohammad Bilawal – sentenced to 2 years.
  7. Punjab Regimental Centre, Mardan Attack: Zahid Khan, Saeed Alam, and Yasir Nawaz – each sentenced to 2 years.
