However, 29 years of the sentence have been suspended, meaning Melissa Curtis will only serve one year in jail, followed by five years of supervised probation.
According to details, Upon release, Curtis will be registered as a sex offender and will not be allowed to be alone with minors, except her own children.
The teacher was charged in November last year with having a sexual relationship with the underage student. Police investigations revealed that Curtis had sexual encounters with the student approximately 20 times in various locations, including the classroom, her car, her home, and the student’s home.
The abuse began when Curtis started an after-school program, which the student joined, providing opportunities for them to be alone in the classroom. Investigations also found that Curtis supplied the minor with alcohol and drugs, leading to addiction.
Curtis had taught at the school for nearly two years before joining another school. The truth came to light when the victim reported the sexual abuse to the police in October 2023, prompting an investigation.”
