New York (Pakistan News Online) Voting for the US presidential election 2024 has officially begun, with the first ballots cast in New Hampshire. The initial voting took place in the small town of Dixville Notch, where six registered voters split their support evenly between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, each receiving three votes.
Dixville Notch, known for its tradition of being the first to vote in the country, started this custom in 1960, casting ballots late at night before the rest of the nation. In the 2020 election, all five votes from this town went to Joe Biden, while Trump did not secure a single vote.
Today marks the official election day across the U.S., though each state may have different opening and closing times for polling. In addition to election day voting, over 10 million Americans have already cast their ballots through early voting, mail-in, and absentee ballots.
A closely contested race is expected between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. To win the presidency, a candidate needs at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes.
