New York (Pakistan News Online) U.S. President Joe Biden has warned of potential sanctions against Iran in response to its recent missile strikes on Israel.
In a statement, Biden emphasized that “sanctions on Iran are imminent” following the attack. He clarified, however, that the United States does not support any military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Biden also announced plans to discuss the situation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu soon.
Iran launched over 200 ballistic missiles targeting Israel, claiming that 95% of its targets were hit successfully. However, the Israeli military refuted these claims, stating that most of the missiles were intercepted mid-air by their defense systems, with no casualties or damage reported at Israeli airbases.
The attack follows heightened tensions between the two countries. Iran’s representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, called the missile strikes a “necessity” for deterrence against Israeli aggression. Iravani justified the attack as an act of self-defense in response to Israel’s violations of Iran’s territorial integrity, including the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Following the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that “Iran made a grave mistake,” with the Israeli military vowing retaliation “at a time and place of our choosing.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed to have used hypersonic missiles in the strike, targeting three Israeli defense bases. Iranian officials warned that any retaliation from Israel would be met with a more destructive response from Tehran.
President Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s full support for Israel, cautioning that the United States is ready to assist in defending Israel from further aggression.
