Abu Dhabi (Pakistan News) Students in the UAE can work in private companies under specific conditions, as outlined by the Federal Decree Law on the Regulation of Labour Relations. Recently, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) clarified the guidelines for hiring juveniles on temporary work permits.

The Ministry emphasized that employing children under 15 is prohibited. However, Emiratis and expatriates aged 15 to 18 can work in the UAE with written consent from their guardian or custodian, as stipulated in Article 5 of the Labour Law.

Daily Working Hours

The law limits working hours for juveniles to six hours per day, which must include one or more rest breaks totaling at least one hour. These breaks are scheduled to ensure that no juvenile works continuously for more than four hours.

Legal Framework

The executive regulations of the Decree Law outline the procedures employers must follow when hiring juveniles, the types of work that are prohibited for them, and the rules for entities that provide professional training and qualifications to juveniles, including charitable, educational, and training institutions.

Renewal and Work Permits

Both Emirati students and resident expatriates can work on projects for a renewable period of six months. Students wishing to work part-time throughout the year can obtain work permits through customer service centers or the MoHRE’s smart applications.

Terms and Conditions

Juveniles are not permitted to work at night, in industrial projects, or in jobs that are hazardous or harmful to their health.

The work assigned to the juvenile must align with the business activities of the establishment.

The establishment’s license must be valid, with no legal violations that could lead to the suspension of its activities.

Checklist for Applicants

To apply for a work permit, applicants need to provide the following:

A color photo with a white background

Written consent from the juvenile’s guardian or custodian

A fitness certificate for the required work, issued by a medical authority

A copy of the juvenile’s passport

A copy of a valid residence permit

An employment contract approved by the ministry, signed by both the employer and the juvenile

The permit application must be submitted by an authorized representative of the establishment.
