Washington (Pakistan News Online) Kimberly Cheatle, the Director of the United States Secret Service, has resigned following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally. Cheatle faced significant pressure to step down and had also appeared before a congressional committee.
In an email to her staff, Cheatle stated, “I take full responsibility for the security failure. In light of recent events, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position with a heavy heart.”
On July 13, during a rally in Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old attempted to target Trump with a sniper rifle from a building. The bullet grazed the former president’s ear before passing behind him. The Secret Service responded immediately, neutralizing the shooter.
Cheatle admitted to the security failure during her congressional testimony, calling it “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.” She assured lawmakers, “There clearly was a mistake, and we will make every effort to ensure that this never happens again.”
Kimberly Cheatle had been serving as the Director of the U.S. Secret Service since August 2022.
